Speech Buddies is the web site of Articulate Technologies. They are focused on Speech Therapy and help children, parents, schools, speech therapists, health care providers, and pediatricians. They even have free custom lesson plans available.

How important is an IEP when most of the funding for ASD is being taken away from schools in NSW? Our school has been reluctant to hold a IEP meeting with me given that the school's funding is being so severely reduced.

I like the idea of a letter to the teacher at the start of each year.

An IEP is a critical part of a diagnosed child's education. It's a critically important right and resource.

If the school is unable to do an IEP, then you can start to draft one up yourself and negotiate agreement points in a quick meeting or over the phone.

It's all about finding your child's strengths and weaknesses and then using those strengths to reduce the weaknesses.

Many of the things in an IEP cost nothing at all.

For example;

My child is particularly disorganised. When told to bring things into his classroom, he will forget some things and then either have to make trips outside to his bag or do without.

The school's accommodation, in their IEP, was to allow him to take his bag into the classrooms.

This is FREE for the school but it makes a big difference to him.

Don't waive your right to an IEP.

An IEP is only good if both parties to come to some agreement..In my case my son needs a schedule and a timer to help him manage his time, apparently that can't provide this!!!
In our case an IEP is useless as this is all we have asked for as having a schedule and timer will make a big difference...
I will continue to push for the things my son needs...

My son is not an Aspie, he is bi-polar with oppositonal defiance. He is disorganized. We asked that he have a locker assignment that is near his mid day classes so he can actually go to it, or be allowed to have his text books in an e-reader so he doesn't have to manage a 30lb back pack. This was not possible.

And no, he can't have testing. His grades are passing. Even though individual assignments are A, A, A, F, missing, F, Missing. It averages out to C.

One of the most frequent questions I'm asked is why an aspie (or suspected aspie) suddenly goes "cold" and backs off on an otherwise good relationship.
